An open letter, from Pastor Mike: As some of you may be aware, our church and my family experienced a theft during Sunday school yesterday morning, March 24th. In the past 24 hours much love in word and action has already been shared. My family and I feel incredibly cared for. And for that, words cannot adequately express my overwhelming gratitude. After moments when another person has sought to cause us harm, or even has succeeded in causing us harm, it seems easier for Satan to redirect our focus, attention and priorities away from God. Maybe in moments like these, Paul’s word’s in his letter to the church in Ephesus can provide some guidance. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12 NASB). It seems easy after experiencing betrayal, loss, pain, etc. to pass judgement, and to view the situation as an us-versus-them conflict. To take a position of superiority would not only misrepresent our own condition, but may also turn others away from the good news that they so desperately need to hear. The truth is, we are all human, and we all struggle with behavior that separates us from having right relationship with God and with one another. Paul reminds us that Our “struggle,” our “wrestling” (NKJV) is not with one another, it is not with our neighbors, it is not with strangers, and it is not even with those who seek or have succeeded in causing us harm. No, Jesus teaches us a response that is very different than the one our human nature would have us to do. “You have heard that it was said, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” (Matthew 5:43-45 NASB). This is an incredibly difficult challenge to fulfill. But, what truly distinguishes us as Christ followers is our recognition of our common humanity and struggle. What attracts others to relationship with us and with the God of Abraham is our holy response when others around us struggle in a manner that causes us hurt. So brothers and sisters, continue to join me as you always have in prayer, words, and behavior that facilitates the healing of right relationships with our God and with one another. Join together in this awesome and unbelievable ministry of reconciliation that God has entrusted us with in real and powerful ways (2nd Corinthians 5:18). Do this not just for ourselves, not just for our neighbors, not just for the stranger, but for our enemies as well. Many Blessings, Pastor Mike Trott
